Solar Energy

Overview

Did you know that the amount of sunlight that strikes the earth's surface in a mere two hours is enough to provide energy to the entire world for a year? With the help of photovoltaic panels and mirrors that concentrate solar radiation, solar technologies convert sunlight into electrical energy which can be used by humans.

A great benefit of solar power is that is it not only renewable, but also infinite. Another benefit for solar power is that, unlike the burning of fossil fuels, the conversion of sunlight into power creates no harmful greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, solar panels have a very small carbon footprint, as they last for 25 years plus with no loss in efficiency. Tthe materials used in most panels are recycled as well, so the carbon footprint will continue to shrink.

Why solar?

What’s great about solar power is that anyone can use it by installing panels on their roof. Additionally, there are many benefits to using solar energy, not just to help the environment. These reasons mostly concern adults, however kids should check them out as well because they can install solar panels onto their own homes when they grow up.

Reduce or eliminate energy bills

PDS is located in Princeton, New Jersey, which has an average amount of sun, but it’s enough to power a house of five people at net zero energy consumption. And on warm spring/summer days, solar power generates much more than a house consumes, which in turn also reduces energy bills.

Even though sunny days will produce more solar power, solar panels draw energy regardless of if the weather is cloudy. Indirect, or diffused.

Environment/Sustainability

Using SBSP will greatly reduce the negative impact on the environment that energy causes. SBSP is sustainable and does not emit greenhouse gases, and can generate 40 times more energy constantly than can a solar panel annually.

Economy

SBSP will cause a large strain on the economy and is very expensive to implement, which is one of the major drawbacks of the technology. It will cost billions of dollars to install SBSP, and as many as 100 launches into space will be required until it is ready for actual use.

National Security

SBSP poses possible risks to the safety of the people on Earth. For example, when energy is being transmitted from space to Earth, there have to be proper measures in place to make sure that the energy does not come in contact with anyone on Earth.
